We love sharing the many of advantages (and there are plenty) of Boca Raton living with our neighbors and potential neighbors. One of the perks some residents overlook is the delightful Summer in the City series at the Mizner Park Amphitheater.
In addition to its exceptional concerts and events throughout the year, Mizner Park becomes a home for “Music and Movies Under the Stars” each summer. This year, the series runs from June 9 through August 12, so check your calendar today to enjoy some free family fun.
What should you expect from Boca Raton’s Summer in the City 2017?
There’s a lot to love about this lineup of concerts and movies. If you’ve missed out in previous years, here’s what you need to know.
There is no charge for admission.
That’s right. The series is free, so it’s a great way to get out of the house for a pleasant and budget-friendly Friday evening.
You should plan ahead for seating.
The amphitheater lawn is well-manicured and looks great, but that doesn’t mean you’ll want to spend the entire evening sitting on the ground or standing. Fortunately, you can bring a blanket or chairs for free events. And if you don’t feel like lugging them out, chairs are also usually available for rent for $5.
Events happen rain or shine.
Except in cases of extreme weather, you can expect the show to go on. You can’t bring umbrellas into the amphitheater, though, so you might want to pack a poncho or rain slicker if you plan to ride out the weather.
Food and beverages are available for purchase.
Once inside the venue, attendees will find food and drink options on both movie and concert nights. For the concerts, there is also a Beer Garden with craft beers provided by Hollywood Brewery.
Since refreshments are available for purchase, no outside food or drinks are allowed. So leave your cooler at home.
No pets are allowed.
Animals aren’t generally the biggest fans of loud music or movies, but even if yours is the exception, you won’t get to share this experience with your four-legged friends.
Consider carpooling and show up early.
Parking is available at City Hall and the Downtown libraries. There are also some metered spots and the parking garages. Space is limited, though, and it can be a bit of a headache, so you might want to share a ride if you can.
Since both the concerts and movies are general admission, you’ll want to arrive early to claim the best spot. This is especially true for the movies because they tend to be crowded.
Who is performing at the concerts?
I hope you love tribute bands because the Summer in the City series does. But don’t worry. These bands aren’t just a couple of devoted fans with a little bit of musical talent and some gear. They’re top-notch acts who do justice to the originals.
And if tribute bands aren’t your thing, there are a few alternative options, including the Florida Atlantic University’s Summer Concert Band and Symphonia – Boca Raton (note that these two concerts are not on Fridays). Check out the schedule below to see what might pique your interest.
- Friday, June 16 @ 7:30pm – A Tribute to The Eagles by Long Run
- Sunday, June 18 @ 7:00pm – FAU Old Time Concert in Park: Before the show, you can check out the 7th Annual Mizner Park Downtown Drive Car Show. It runs from 10am-4pm with more than 150 cars on display.
- Friday, July 7 @ 7:30pm – A Tribute to the Beatles by Liverpool Live
- Friday, July 14 @ 7:30pm – A Tribute to Billy Joel by Turnstiles
- Friday, July 21 @ 7:30pm – A Tribute to Tom Petty by Petty Hearts
- Friday, August 4 @ 7:30pm – A Tribute to Fleetwood Mac by Dreams: Crystal Visions
- Friday, August 11 @ 7:30pm – A Tribute to Bob Marley by Ruffhouse
- Saturday, August 12 @ 8:00pm – A Space Odyssey by The Symphonia Boca Raton
Note that the Friday night concerts feature an opening performance by School of Rock with the tribute band beginning at 8pm.
What movies are showing?
In addition to this stellar lineup of concerts, the series also features two family friendly movies. On Friday, June 23 at 8:00pm, attendees will be treated to Fantastic Beasts with a magic pre-show at 7:30. On Friday, July 28, there will be a Polynesian Dance pre-show at 7:30pm followed by a showing of Disney’s Moana.
The showings are a great excuse to keep the kids up past their bedtime, which they want to do even more during the long days of summer.
But don’t think the movies are just for those with children. You’ll want to see a movie at the amphitheater at least once. The experience is different that going to the movies or watching a movie at home, and you’re sure to remember it.
The City of Boca Raton’s Summer in the City series is a wonderful way to spend a slow Friday evening. It creates a sense of community that you might not see during some of our busier times.
I hope you can make at least one concert or movie this summer. Be sure to say hello if you see me there.
