Nothing says summer like burgers and beer. If your looking to sample some of the best burger joints in South Florida, you don’t want to miss the 2017 Boca Burger Battle in Sanborn Square Park.

What to expect from Boca Burger Battle 2017

For the sixth year running, chefs from Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale, Delray Beach, and the surrounding area will compete for the title of Grill Master. Among the entries this year are M.E.A.T. Eatery and Taproom, Shake Shack, Tucker Duke’s Lunchbox, and Deck 84. You’ll benefit from the stiff competition as each contestant tries to impress both you and the judges.

A general admission ticket gives you access (from 7pm-10pm) to unlimited sampling of burgers and bites from the competitors. Don’t expect to find run of the mill burgers either. While the theme is “Backyard BBQ,” these handcrafted masterpieces take grilling to another level as they combine interesting flavors and textures.

There is also a “Best Alternative Grill Master” category, which means you can try some vegan and vegetarian options if you love the grill but not the red meat.

Beer, Wine, and Spirits

Three drink coupons also come with a general admission ticket. These coupons allow you to sample drinks from major labels and independent brewers and vintners like Barrel of Monks Brewing and Jam Jar Wines.

If you are just as interested in the drink options as the burgers, you might consider upgrading to a VIP ticket, which allows for unlimited drink sampling. It also gets you into the venue an hour earlier, which means you have first access to the competition and can avoid some of the longer lines.

During the event, guests will have the opportunity to hear live performances by VOODOO POSSUM and The Big City Dogs.

VOODOO POSSUM: “Think UB40…with a twang! Country classics & Southern standards, all played to authentic reggae riddims.” You can expect VOODOO POSSUM to play hits from country stars like Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson in a reggae style.  If you enjoy country, reggae, or both, you’ll enjoy this fusion band who won the 2016 Austin Reggae Festival Fan Voting Contest.

The Big City Dogs: This Fort Lauderdale Classic Rock and Blues band performs hits from some of your favorites including The Rolling Stones, The Eagles, Pink Floyd, and more. With four seasoned professionals take the stage, it’s like tuning into a classic rock radio station with the energy of a live performance.

No one knows exactly what the weather will bring, but the event happens rain or shine. And in previous years, it’s had both, so come prepared.

Previous Battle Winners

If you’re thinking about heading to this year’s Boca Burger Battle and you’d like a glimpse of what you might find, visit one of the previous winners.

M.E.A.T. Eatery and Taproom

As the judge’s pick for “Best Grill Master” two years running, M.E.A.T. joins the competition as a frontrunner again this year. Visit their restaurant, for a grab-and-go meal or to stay for dinner. Just don’t be fooled by the unusual location (located at Cendyn Spaces on North Federal Highway).

M.E.A.T. takes typical American fair to another dimension with their menu, which includes duck fat French fries, Nutella ice cream, and the “Nancy Pants” brisket burger. They smoke their own meat and makes their sausage in-house, but they still work fast enough for a fast lunch option.

In addition to classic grilled dishes, you’ll find salads and vegetarian options.  They also have twelve beers on tap, a selection of wines, and microbrewed sodas.

Tucker Duke’s Lunchbox

For the last three years, the Burger Battle People’s Choice Award for “Best Boca Burger” has gone to Tucker Duke’s Lunchbox. But don’t let the name fool you. You shouldn’t expect any ordinary brown-bag dishes here. Instead, you’ll find a burger with cranberry sauce, fried pickle spears, nacho tots, reuben fritters, and many more delicious creations.

The locations at Deerfield Beach and Boca Raton have slightly different menus, but they both excel in craft burgers, craft beer, and superb service. If you want to keep your choice simple, just order the Tucker Duke’s Burger. It doesn’t come with sides (although the burger has onion rings on it), and they refuse to customize their namesake.

Tucker Duke’s serves brunch, lunch, and supper, and you’re sure to find something to love at each. Just be sure to bring your appetite because they don’t scrimp on the servings.

For the last five years, the Boca Burger Battle has hand-picked competitors from among the best burger chefs in the area. We may never truly settle the “who makes the best burger in Boca” debate, but it sure is fun trying to find out.

Even if you’ve tried every restaurant in the competition, you never know what they have planned to try to take the top prize. If you make it to this year’s event, let me know who earned your wooden chip for “People’s Choice.”
